What are Trigger points?
Trigger points are knots of muscle that are created when muscles cannot relax. It is possible to feel these knots under the skin. Trigger Points usually irritate the nerves around them and cause a pain that is felt in another part of the body, known as a referred pain. Trigger point injections are used to help relieve pain associated with neck pain, back pain, low back pain, sciatica and headaches to name a few. Most trigger point injections performed in clinics utilize corticosteroids to reduce pain. The corticosteroids reduce the inflammation in the effected tissues, which reduces the pain. However, corticosteroids also have a side effect of causing scar tissue and adhesions in the injected soft tissue. Scar tissue and adhesions can ultimate alter the function of the tissues and create additional problems long term. SARAPIN® is a plant derived natural substance that we utilize when doing trigger point injections. It gives pain relief, but does not create scar tissue and adhesions in the tissues. SARAPIN® has been used safely and effectively for pain management by physicians for over 70 years, is harmless, and has had no adverse events associated with it in it’s 70 year history.
